Portrait photography is 10% inspiration and 90% moving furniture – in the words of Arnold Newman. What he meant, and what I’ve found to be true: the image is never just about the person. It’s about the context you build around them.
I photograph people across a wide spectrum – from carefully lit studio portraits and editorial settings to environmental portraits that put the subject firmly in their world. Musicians at instruments, athletes in their discipline, artists in their studios, chefs in the controlled chaos of a kitchen. The settings vary as much as the subjects. What stays constant is the search for a frame where everything earns its place.
Based in Telgte near Münster, within close reach of Osnabrück, Bielefeld, and the Ruhr area, I photograph people wherever their world takes us.
