For a project on people at work I visited locksmith and metalworker Matthias Schaumann. In his workshop in Netphen near Siegen, he has been crafting custom-made balconies, staircases and furniture from steel for his clients in the Südwestfalen region for decades.
What fascinates me about steel fabrication is that the material appears unmanipulable. When you watch Matthias at work though, you witness a gradual but complete transformation. It was a pleasure to photograph in this unique atmosphere that marries a deep calm with unrelenting force.
