Telephone boxes are a dying breed. Some of them try their best to resist redundancy. Seemingly forlorn optimisation and upgrades let non-box shapes, huge screens and WiFi emerge. Many units, however, are in a sad state and some are even stripped of their primary function. The variety of shapes and types of boxes and telephones within a single country is astonishing and even the gutted ones continue to serve as advertising space, rain shelter, smoking room and toilet for all sorts of animals.
